Hello. I’m K.J. Kolka, a native of northern Michigan and a fan of comic strips for years. I live in the city of Gaylord, located on the 45th parallel, halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. My wife Diane and I have been married since 1992 and we have one daughter.

I grew up in the little community of Grayling and was a very creative child. My father introduced me to newspaper comics when I was very young, reading them to me upon his knee. Little did he know the impact it would have on my life. My favorite comics have included Peanuts, Alley Oop; Broom Hilda; Mandrake the Magician; Blondie; Hagar the Horrible; The Phantom; Dick Tracy; Brenda Starr; Annie; Funky Winkerbean.

From newspaper comics I soon moved on to comic books, collecting Batman and then the Incredible Hulk; the Astonishing Ant-man; and the original Captain Marvel (“SHAZAM!”).

I studied English and art at Concordia College (now University) in Ann Arbor, Michigan and later at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana, finally completing a bachelor’s degree. The succeeding years were spent in the pubication field, doing everything from prepress work to publication layout to writing.

Today I work at the local newspaper in Gaylord, Michigan doing editing and photo processing. Between that and my family, I find life to be full of adventure, even without a cape or costume.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, especially mysteries (Sherlock Holmes, Poirot and Father Dowling are among my list of favorites); history/archaeology; walking and bicycling.

Originally I created The Cardinal on Wednesday, November 15, 1978, The Cardinal for the Campus Voice newspaper at Concordia College. It ran for three years. Nine years later, a revised version of the strip was published. It appeared in its own publication, distributed across Northern Michigan and in Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti from 1990 to 2006.

In 2007 it became time to take the strip in a new direction once again, with a potentially larger audience. I’m excited and full of ideas.

You are welcome to join me in this, my new comic strip adventure, where each Sunday we’ll be enjoying the latest installment in the adventures of my favorite reluctant super hero. Your feedback is welcome.
